Matthias Taugwalder grew up in Zermatt — among summits his family has known for generations. As a direct descendant of Peter Taugwalder father and son, who made the first ascent of the Matterhorn, his connection to the mountains is no mere backdrop. It is the foundation and origin of a photographic practice that does not show the summit, but places the viewer inside it.

For more than 25 years, he has been driven by the same question that every panorama pioneer before him has asked: how do you capture an experience that breaks every frame? This question drives his personal work in the high Alps just as much as pioneering projects for clients such as Mammut, AXA, Google, Ringier and Swiss Radio and Television SRF — always with the most advanced means of the day.

He studied Business Information Systems at the University of Zurich and Editorial Photography at MAZ, the Institute for Journalism and Communication in Lucerne. Analytical thinking and a documentary standard: two stances that, in his work, are not contradictions but method. His works are created on summits he climbs himself: from large-format photography to fully spherical immersion.

Matthias Taugwalder lives with his family in Winterthur and keeps returning to the mountains that have always shaped his work.
